Descripción

The Collegiate Church of Santa María la Real was declared as a Historic Monument in 1931. Built thanks to King Alfonso VII in the thirteenth century, the church is gothic, with some parts of other artistic styles. It has three naves; the central one is the most important. A new nave was opened in 1500 to the southern part of the church. The cloister, built by Juan de Colonia, is located in the northern part. The sacristy and other rooms of the sixteenth century are in the apse.

The southern portal is the main entrance to the church. This door is almost an exact replica of one of Burgos’s cathedral entrances, the Sarmental door. It has three archivolts with sculptures of angels and musicians, another sculpture with the twelve Apostles and, on top of them, Christ with the Evangelists, in their human and symbolic forms, who are writing the gospels.

In the same façade, you can also find San Miguel portal. We know it was finished in 1504, thanks to an inscription located over the arch that forms it. With two pinnacles, the statue of San Miguel emerges on top of the door. Under him, they are represented the sculptures of San Juan the Evangelist, San Juan the Baptist, a king and a bishop.
