Descripción

The church of San Juan, parish of Castrojeriz, was modified in the sixteenth century. It was built over the remains of other construction whose tower, apse and cloister are still standing. The magnificent cloister was built in the fourteenth century and it’s covered by a Mudejar coffered ceiling of the fifteenth century. The church is really big, with three naves and ribbed vaults.

The chapels of Santa Ana and the Name of Jesus, promoted by the Lopez-Gallo and Castro-Mújica families, are very interesting. The members of these families were important traders of wool with Flandes in the sixteenth century. They were so rich that the Gallo family had an elegant palace in Brujas called “The palace of the Seven Towers”.

The small altarpiece of Santa Ana was promoted by Juan de Castro Mújica and it belongs to the plateresque art. It was carved in the middle of the sixteenth century. In the chapel of the Gallo family there is a magnificent Flemish painting with scenes of the Annunciation or the Visitation, among others. It is supposed to have been painted by Ambrosius Benson in the first part of the sixteenth century.
