Descripción

Although the first mention of this castle appears in a document of the year 882, the remains that are still standing come from the Middle Ages. It had a defensive function in the war against the Muslims and, after the Reconquest, different families fought to be its owners. It belonged to the Crown and, at various stages, to the Castro, Mendoza and Lara families.

With an irregular structure, the castle has a bailey and a keep. The last one has four floors and an elegant staircase, and the windows are built with different types of arches. The castle may have been built between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.

The place was a silent witness of significant events that took place there, such as the siege that king Alfonso VII did to recover the village against king Alfonso I of Aragón. Another important event had the king Pedro I as the protagonist. He ordered to execute his aunt, the queen Leonor of Castilla in this castle, in the middle of the fourteenth century. Her tomb is situated in the church of Nuestra Señora del Manzano.
