The Melgar Village

Melgar is located in a plain full of contrasts due to the presence of moors, cereal fields, vegetable gardens and meadows. The rivers Pisuerga and Valdavia, and the canals of Pisuerga, Cuérnago and Castile surround the village.

The Town Hall and the Church of la Asunción, declared Historic Monuments in 1992, are located in the centre of Melgar.

Ancestral houses and arcaded squares can be found in this village. The Saint Anne hermitage and the Palace of Fernán Lopez del Campo are in the Major Square.

The Casa del Cordón and the ancestral house of the Palazuelo-Emperador family are important buildings because of their decoration. Nowadays, the first one is a theater and the second one is an ethnographic museum.

Close to Melgar, the hermitage of the Zorita Virgin keeps inside the statue of the Virgin. The church still preserves part of its Romanesque construction, such as the apse and nave. The place is specially revered by the local population.

The Melgar Municipality

The Melgar municipality is situated in the western part of Burgos, in the border with the province of Palencia. There are five villages included in this municipality: San Llorente de la Vega, Santa María Ananúñez, Tagarrosa, Valtierra de Riopisuerga and Melgar de Fernamental. 1,800 inhabitants live in a municipality for an area of 109 square kilometers.

Surrounded by hills, river Banks, moors, cereal fields and vegetable gardens, the Melgar municipality is watered by the river Pisuerga and the canal of Castile, a magnificent work of engineering of the eighteenth century.

Besides the beauty of its natural environment, this municipality guards several important monuments. Some of them have been declared Historic Monuments, such as the church of La Asunción, in Melgar, the medieval tower of Tagarrosa and several constructions related with the Canal of Castile.

The Melgar village preserves some good examples of the typical houses of this region. The Town Hall square and the church of La Asunción are in the city centre. Other monuments of interest are the Casa del Cordón, Casa de los Palazuelos, the palace of Fernán López del Campo, the Santa Ana hermitage and the hermitage of the Zorita Virgin.

Melgar offers the visitors colourful local festivities, natural products and an excellent gastronomy, many good reasons to visit the village.
