The Castilla Channel flows parallel to the river Pisuerga, in the municipality of Melgar. It is one of the most important works of engineering of the eighteenth century.

It was promoted by the king Fernando VI and the Marquis of La Ensenada. The channel was built to provide a way of transport for goods (mostly cereal) and people, in the isolated plain of Castilla. Afterwards, it was used to irrigate the fields and as a source of energy for several mills, fulling machines and hydroelectric power stations.

Its construction took from 1753 till 1849. Different economic problems, such as the War of Independence against the French and the Carlistas Wars, caused that the works were suspended in several occasions.

There are three routes:

  • North route: it goes from Alar del Rey to Calahorra de Ribas. It is 75 kilometers long and has 24 locks.
  • Campos route: it connects Calahorra de Ribas with Medina de Rioseco and it is 78 kilometers long and has 7 locks.
  • South route: it is a secondary route that begins in Grijota and ends in Valladolid. It is 54 kilometers and has 18 locks.

The part of the Channel in Melgar belongs to the North route.

The Channel has been reused for a touristic purpose with the creation of a trekking and cycling route, the GR-89. The visitor can enjoy boat trips from the jetty of Carrecalzada, in Melgar, to the lock of San Llorente de la Vega.
